US Senator Scott Brown is in Florida today raising money for his campaign with fellow freshman US Senator Marco Rubio, the Cuban-American Republican and Tea Party darling who was elected the same year as Brown. The Massachusetts senator has been on a two-day fundraising swing in Florida. He attended a reception last night in Bal Harbour and two events today in Palm Beach.
Struggling to maintain his frontrunner status, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is using his fundraising prowess to try to boost his image. A super PAC supporting Romney is going on the air with ads in eight states. The super PAC is spending $1.5 million in advertising in states that will hold primaries in February and March. The new wave of spending could serve to combat the growing popularity of Rick Santorum, who is now running head to head with Romney in national polls, propelled by support from conservative and Tea Party voters.
Mitt Romney decisively won the Nevada caucuses last night, notching the first back-to-back victory of the Republican nominating contest and demonstrating that he can win in a state with a potent Tea Party presence.
Former Senate candidate and Tea Party activist Sharron Angle has endorsed Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum. Mitt Romney has rocketed to an 18-point lead in South Carolina, according to CNN poll released today. South Carolina, the first southern state to hold a primary, could prove to be a crossroads for the Republican nomination process. Social conservatives and Tea Party activists hope to erect a roadblock against Romney.
Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick this morning vigorously defended President Obama, while lobbing harsh criticism at Mitt Romney, the winner of last nightas Iowa caucuses and his predecessor on Beacon Hill. aThe difference between this president and the modern national Republican Party is that this president really does believe weare all in this together,a the governor said, speaking on CBSas The Early Show. In August, Michele Bachmannas conservatism and blunt criticism of President Obama made her a favorite of the Tea Party movement in particular. That support was evident when she placed first in the quadrennial Iowa Straw Poll. But the same day she won, Texas Governor Rick Perry joined the Minnesota congresswoman in the race for the Republican presidential nomination. His temporary rise coincided with her permanent fall in the polls. She is now trying to reclaim momentum by visiting all 99 counties.
Bostonas Tea Party movement has had a change in its top leadership. Christine Morabito has been elected to replace Christen Varley as president of the unofficial political group. Morabito is a psychiatric nurse from Haverhill who has been heavily involved in Tea Party activities since the movementas inception in 2009. She branded herself both ahumbled and honoreda to take over the groupas presidency. The elections themselves reflect further maturation for a loosely affiliated movement that sprang up nationally in 2009.
Newt Gingrich may be considered a Washington insider, but heas going strong with the anti-establishment Tea Party movement. In a straw poll taken by the Tea Party Patrtiots, the nationas largest Tea Party group, Gingrich drew 31 percent of the vote, with Michele Bachmann close behind with 28 percent. Mitt Romney drew 20 percent and Rick Santorum 16 percent.

South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley this morning endorsed Mitt Romney, giving the former Massachusetts governor a key boost in a crucial state as the Republican nominating contest enters its final weeks. Haley, who made the announcement on aFox & Friendsa this morning, was backed by the Tea Party movement and has been a much-sought-after endorsement by the Republican presidential candidates. Haley is scheduled to appear with Romney when he travels to South Carolina later today.
Tea Party favorite and unsuccessful Delaware Senate candidate Christine OaDonnell endorsed Mitt Romney for president yesterday, a rather surprising coup that the Romney camp hopes will bolster the former Massachusetts governoras credibility with the Tea Party going into the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses.
For the last month, Jerry DeLemus, chairman of the Granite State Patriots Liberty PAC, one of the stateas largest Tea-Party affiliated groups, has been going round and round trying to decide on who to endorse for president. I was fascinated by this exchange from the Tea Party debate last night, as reported on by CNN:
Bachmann and Perry squared off on the vaccination situation, with Bachmann saying, “We cannot forget that in the midst of this executive order there’s a big drug company that made millions of dollars because of this.” She added that a former Perry aide was a lobbyist for the company and asked if the issue was about saving lives or money.
Perry responded that the company, Merck, made a $5,000 contribution and said to Bachmann: “If you’re saying I can be bought for $5,000, I’m offended.”
“I’m offended by what happened to all those girls, ” Bachmann said of the required vaccination of girls as young as 12 against cervical cancer.
Traditionally, Republicans have managed to be both pro-business and also pro-religious right, despite rumbling contradictions between the two stances on key issues like the HPV vaccine–where a big drugmaker is making money helping to improve people’s health, but the moralistic Christian right is opposed.
But here the contrast is so strong that you find a right winger making a traditional left wing argument against another politician–e.g., you were bought and paid for by that Big Company. …

With such an amazing guest post on Wednesday, I didn’t get to post my own DeSmogBlog piece (which is actually related to, but far less consequential than, Andrea Kuszewski’s). So I thought I would do it now.
Basically, the piece looks at new data showing that Tea Partiers are considerably worse than mainline Republicans in their rejection of global warming. What I find most disturbing about this is the level of certainty among Tea Party members that they’re right–e.g., the people who are most wrong are most sure of themselves.
