From dpreview.com
Press release: PALO ALTO, Calif., Nov. 7, 2007 - HP today announced that it will seek an alternative business model for its HP-branded cameras and shift resources toward its Print 2.0 growth initiatives.
HP is currently working to identify an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partner that would be licensed to design, source and distribute digital cameras under the HP brand. HP will continue selling its own cameras through the holiday season and intends to have the partnership arrangement in place in the first half of 2008.
This shift in strategy is intended to enable HP to accelerate its investment in Print 2.0 initiatives. These include furthering HP’s leadership position in home photo printing and online photo services, while accelerating the company’s retail photo-finishing business.
Announced in May 2007, the company’s Print 2.0 strategy focuses on three areas: delivering a next-generation digital printing platform that increases print speeds and lowers the cost of printing for high-volume commercial markets; making it easier to print from the web; and, extending HP’s digital content creation and publishing platforms across all customer segments.
As a result of its new camera business strategy, HP will take a pre-tax charge of approximately $30 million in the fourth fiscal quarter ending Oct. 31, 2007.

Summer is on its way and HP has a raft of releases to help capture the fun and games. The remainder of the cameras released are hardly ground-breaking stuff but HP do seem to have all the bases covered price-wise with new cameras starting from $79.99. Also released are two new printers, one with wireless connectivity, and an ‘all-in-one’ printer, scanner and copier with CD/DVD printing capability.

HP Designjet Z Photo Printers
From dpreview.com
Press Release: BOEBLINGEN, Germany, September 26, 2006 – HP today announced it is changing the way graphics professionals create large-format images with the unveiling of the new HP Designjet Z2100 and Z3100 Series Photo Printers. Continuing to expand its professional printing portfolio, HP is leveraging its pigment ink technologies developed for the HP Photosmart Pro B9180 to create the first large-format printers employing HP’s Scalable Printing Technology.
The HP Designjet Z Series printers are designed to deliver intuitive, dependable and repeatable colour accuracy for 24- and 44-inch museum-quality prints with 200 years’ photo permanence.1 Experience simple and intuitive colour management
The HP Designjet Z Series employs the industry’s first embedded spectrophotometer, utilising i1 Colour Technology from X-Rite. Mounted on the printer carriage with completely self-contained optics and electronics, the embedded spectrophotometer greatly simplifies accurate colour-matching, enabling automated ICC profiling and HP Advanced Closed-Loop Colour Calibration. The result means the user can create colour profiles in minutes rather than hours and expect exact colour matches throughout the printing process.
Leading brands in the creative community, including Adobe, Colourbyte, EFI, GMG and X-Rite, have worked closely with HP to develop solutions optimised specifically for the HP Designjet Z Series to fully address the needs of key markets, such as graphic design, professional photography, prepress and digital fine arts. From X-Rites’s i1 Colour Technology to the use of Adobe’s Lightroom calibration application, these solutions further streamline workflow and provide users a simple, reliable printing experience.
The HP Z Series Photo Printer colour management partner tools include:
Create and customise ICC profiles with HP Advanced Profiling Solution
The HP Designjet Z2100 GP and HP Designjet Z3100 GP editions contain the HP Advanced Profiling Solution developed by HP and X-Rite (formerly GretagMacbeth). The HP Advanced Profiling Solution is an end-to-end colour management system developed specifically for the most demanding graphics professionals. It works seamlessly with the embedded spectrophotometer to easily create and edit ICC profiles, saving you the time and expense of outsourcing the ICC creation expertise. It also includes a screen calibration device powered by i1 technology.
New ink and media for exquisite museum quality that lasts 200 years1
The HP Designjet Z2100 features an eight-colour HP Vivera pigment ink system, including both matte black and photo black inks, providing a broad colour gamut on matte fine art papers and glossy photo papers for photographic and creative design applications.
The HP Designjet Z3100 uses a 12-ink HP Vivera pigment ink system, including the HP 70 Gloss Enhancer and HP Quad-Black Inks to create beautiful black and white prints and achieve truly neutral greys under different lighting conditions. This also provides continuous tones, uniform gloss and rich blacks, making the HP Designjet Z3100 ideal for high-quality art reproduction, photography and proofing applications.
Both models deliver the industry’s best photo permanence on a wide variety of HP media up to 24- or 44-inches wide.
“With the Z Series Printers, we have colour prints which are as good as, and in some cases, superior to traditional media and normal colour C-prints, and they’ll last for 200 years1. It’s a win-win situation for us,” said Thomas Hoepker, Magnum Photographers. “We have better colour, we have a wider gamut we have total control over it and we don’t have to send it out to a dark room specialist. We do it at home and we have this long lifespan.”
With the HP Designjet Z Series, graphics professionals have the ability to print beyond the limits of traditional papers using the widest range of media options on the market. With 36 new media offerings, users have the flexibility to choose from a vast range of media options within HP’s media portfolio.

Pricing and availability
Estimated U.S. street price is $449.(4) Expected to be available for purchase September 2006 in North America, and specific countries in Latin America and Europe. Press Release: PALO ALTO, Calif., May 31, 2006 – HP today announced a new line of digital photography solutions with features and functionality that greatly enhance the photography experience for consumers.
The company also reported results from a new research study confirming that consumers believe HP Photosmart printers deliver the best overall photo printing experience.
Today’s product introductions include several affordably priced photo printers and all-in-ones, including the first and only compact photo printer on the market capable of storing more than 4,000 photos — the HP Photosmart A716 Compact Photo Printer.
HP also debuted its first touch-screen LCD on the HP Photosmart D7360 Photo Printer for an easy, kiosk-like printing experience at home, and unveiled four ultra-compact HP Photosmart digital cameras.
Feature-packed digital cameras
The 10-megapixel HP Photosmart R967 Digital Camera leads the lineup, featuring a 3-inch image display, durable metal body and sleek silver design. Both the HP Photosmart R967 and the HP Photomsart R827 Digital Camera feature a new innovation called HP steady photo anti-shake mode that utilizes high-sensitivity ISO with HP imaging technology to help prevent blurred photos.
Other features on these cameras include larger LCD display screens, greater megapixal resolution, and an on-camera button to easily order and share photos on Snapfish.
HP also added a new effect to its popular Design Gallery that allows users to turn a photo into a pencil drawing using the edges in the image – the result is similar to an illustration or line art drawing. First introduced earlier this year, the HP Design Galley lets consumers add creative touches such as borders, artistic effects and color tints to their photos with the touch of one button on the back of the camera without using sophisticated software on a PC.
Rounding out HP’s digital camera introductions are the easy-to-use HP Photosmart E427 Digital Camera with 6-megapixel resolution and 5x digital zoom and the ultra-compact HP Photosmart M627 Digital Camera featuring 7-megapixels and 24x total zoom – 3x optical, 8x digital. With today’s introduction, HP now has the broadest portfolio of cameras with in-camera red-eye removal under $500.
Photo studios on the go
HP’s new portable photo studios and compact photo printers are packed with features that make it simpler for consumers to capture and print brilliant photos almost anywhere. Among the featured enhancements, the HP Photosmart compact photo printer line includes a Photo Fix button that uses HP Real Life technologies to automatically remove red-eye, sharpen blurred images, and improve brightness, color and contrast.
Delivering the power of a PC in a printer, HP Photosmart A716 Compact Photo Printer is the only printer of its kind that stores photos – more than 4,000 – with four gigabytes of internal memory. Consumers can easily print 4 x 6-inch, 5 x 7-inch and panorama photos almost anywhere imaginable – parties, reunions, sporting events, family gatherings or vacations.
HP also added the ultra-light and portable(4) HP Photosmart A616 Compact Photo Printer and HP Photosmart A516 Compact Photo to its compact photo printer line. These printers enable consumers to conveniently print true-to-life 4 x 6-inch, passport and panoramic photos that resist fading for generations.
The HP Photosmart A430 Portable Photo Studio series is an integrated solution featuring a compact photo printer, built-in dock and an HP M- or R-series digital camera – with the option to purchase the photo studio printer separately from the digital camera. This printer has practically everything a digital photographer needs to capture and print 4 x 6-inch photos in three easy steps – snap, dock and print. Recent third-party testing showed that three out of four consumers preferred the HP Photosmart A430 Portable Photo Studio over Kodak’s Easyshare Series 3/C310 for the best overall printing experience.
The stylish and compact design of these printers coupled with the optional battery(4) makes these printers truly portable. For even greater portability, HP has added a built-in handle to the HP Photosmart A716 and A616 Compact Photo Printers as well as to the HP Photosmart A430 Portable Photo Studio series.
New Vivera inks featured in the HP 110 Tri-color Inkjet Print Cartridge were designed to work exclusively with HP’s line of compact photo printers. The inks produce lab-quality photos as well as enhanced image permanence and durability.
World’s fastest photo printers at lower price points
The company’s six new HP Photosmart photo printers and all-in-ones, built on HP’s scalable printing technology, feature the industry’s fastest print speeds(5) at the most affordable prices for consumers – as low as $129.

red-eye, apply Smart Focus and add photo brightening. Priced at $199,(6) the D7360 features six individual high-capacity ink cartridges that enable high-volume printing of 4 x 6-inch photos in as fast as 12 seconds.

This all-in-one printer also features a large 3.6-inch LCD screen to easily view and select images, and is capable of producing true-to-life photos in as fast as 12 seconds. Additionally, these photo printers feature HP Printer Check, a new automatic detection and download tool that identifies printer issues and updates out-of-date printer drivers. HP Photosmart Pro B9180
From dpreview.com
PMA 2006: Today HP announced its new A3+ Photo Printer, the Photosmart Pro B9180. With eight individual high capacity pigment ink cartridges that can print up to 80 A3+ prints, or 840 10x15cm photos. The B9180 is said to produce instantly dry, waterproof prints that resist fading for up to 200 years.
Press Release: ORLANDO, USA, February 27th, 2006 – HP today announced the launch of its new HP Photosmart Pro B9180 A3+ Photo Printer, designed specifically for professional photographers.
With eight, high capacity individual pigment-based HP Vivera Inks and enhanced media compatibility, this leading printing system allows photographers to be up to 30 percent more productive 1, helping them succeed in the increasingly competitive professional photography market.
Magnum photographer Carl Dekeyzer said, “There is no time wasted waiting around for proofs with the HP Photosmart Pro B9180. As well as demonstrating impressive print speeds, the new system delivers prints at an affordable cost per page. Finally, the outstanding image quality and the precise and consistent colours allow me to select those images that will be best suited to display or sell.”
Drawing on HP’s heritage in the graphics and commercial printing market this efficient, powerful new printer will produce high quality, instant dry, durable, waterproof prints that resist fading for up to 200 years, a new benchmark in photography. 2
The newly designed printing system features HP’s proprietary scalable printing technology for increased productivity, versatility and affordable cost per page, along with eight individual pigment ink cartridges, four two-colour printheads and a range of professional photo and fine art papers. The high-capacity ink cartridges allow professional photographers to print up to approximately 80 A3+ prints or 840 10 x15 cm photos 3. In addition, HP Pro print plug-in for Adobe Photoshop, and a host of ICC profiles in the printer software, deliver precise, predictable colour quality, print after print.
Professional quality papers
For photographers without large format printing facilities, producing A3+ prints that meet professional requirements is a challenge. Industry leading HP Advanced Photo Paper solves this problem. Featuring retail quality finishes, in glossy and satin-matt, customers will appreciate the durability of the thick, heavy paper. The paper’s instant dry porous coating allows immediate handling without smudging, helping to create a more productive and efficient studio.
Additionally, new A3+ HP digital fine art papers, based on HP’s professional large format media range, provide photographers with the materials needed to display their work in a gallery. Four types of papers – Watercolour, Aquarella Art, Smooth Fine Art and Artist Matte Canvas – provide professionals with greater choice when printing work for display.
Henry Wilhelm, Wilhelm Imaging Research Inc., (WIR) said, “With WIR Display Permanence Ratings of more than 200 years, prints made with the HP Photosmart Pro B9180 A3+ Photo Printer, Vivera pigment inks, and select HP glossy photo papers and matte fine art papers 4 set a new benchmark for overall colour print permanence. When displayed framed under glass, prints made with the new printer, inks, and papers are among the longest-lasting prints in the entire 130-year history of colour photography.
“To put this achievement in perspective, displayed prints made with the HP B9180 and Vivera pigment inks are five times more stable than the best of all current traditional dye-based silver halide colour prints, Fujicolor Crystal Archive prints (WIR rated at 40 years) — and more than ten times longer lasting than Kodak Edge Generations and Royal Generations prints (WIR rated at 19 years).”
Industry leading image quality with HP Vivera Inks
The eight high-capacity HP 38 Pigment Ink Cartridges, with new patented waterproof 5 HP Vivera inks, deliver durable life-like colour for professional portraits, landscapes, proofing and fine art prints. The new ink cartridges have been engineered to deliver consistent results with the HP Photosmart Pro B9180 A3+ Photo Printer.
In addition, the four HP 70 dual-colour printheads feature 8,448 nozzles for precise, consistent drop placement, enhanced colour accuracy and prints that will more closely represent the image seen through the lens and on the PC.
HP’s third generation grey ink creates colour as well as black and white prints with smooth transitions from one shade to the next, and subtle neutral tones that are consistent and controlled. Photographers can select from the two types of black inks: photo black for high contrast black and white photos with deep, rich blacks, or matte black for printing onto HP’s range of fine art papers.
For enhanced productivity, photographers can individually replace the printheads and single ink cartridges, which are available in 27ml sizes as required. This will help small studios keep costs in line with usage. For convenience, ink and media supplies can be ordered online at www.hp.com/eur/hpoptions. 6
Professional performance and versatility
The HP Photosmart Pro B9180 A3+ Photo Printer delivers ICC profiling options for perfect colour reproduction on a variety of standard and specialised media. Professional photos will look just as they did through the lens or on the calibrated monitor, with precision colour consistency for the highest quality prints, colour control and accurate photo proofs available for a variety of HP and non-HP media as well as digital fine art paper.
Photographers can immediately print their photos and proofs with HP’s fast, professional printing technology without having to rely on a photo lab. Proofs can be printed in less than 2 minutes for A3+ prints and less than ten seconds for 10x15cm prints, a new speed benchmark 7. The printer is perfectly suited to master the most challenging photo printing tasks as well as the everyday printing of documents.
PC, Mac or mixed environments requiring multiple connectivity options can utilise the USB-high speed and Ethernet networking capabilities. Software tools include Adobe Photoshop plug-in and optional raster image processor (RIP) software for professional colour management.
“Designed for professional photographers, the new HP Photosmart Pro B9180 A3+ Photo Printer and co-designed supplies, will help studios meet customer demands for high quality prints,” said Michael Diehl, vice president, Digital Photography and Entertainment, HP IPG EMEA. “The new printing system will also provide any photographer who is serious about photography with the tools to realise their artistic vision.”

A choice of 15 unique shooting modes including action, landscape, beach and theatre mode, gives users a definitive solution for any scenario. The new ‘theatre mode’, for example, makes it easier to capture correctly exposed true-to-life photographs of concerts and performances at the touch of a button. Photographers can use this feature together with the extended zoom to get up close and personal, no matter where they are sitting.
In addition, these cameras benefit from a host of new and exclusive HP Real Life technologies. These landmark features include the new HP In-camera Panorama stitching, which allows users to ‘stitch’ together multi-shot photos of landscapes and sequences in the camera. The camera can seamlessly stitch up to 5 photos together, without the use of a PC, to create a single photo for easy printing. Panorama photos can then be previewed on the camera’s large LCD screen, allowing users to confirm that they’ve captured their desired shot.
Both models are also equipped with a ‘video mode’, making it possible to capture the sights and sounds of every moment with picture perfect quality. Often, when reviewing video, photographers have a desire to extract specific frames or stills from the moving images. Users can extract, print and share any of the moving pictures as single frame photographs.
Other HP Real Life technologies featured on these cameras include HP Adaptive Lighting Technology, which automatically brightens selected areas of high contrast photos to give brighter, more true-to-life shots. Also, HP In-Camera Red-Eye Removal ensures that all photos taken turn out flawless, by amending the images whilst they are still in the camera, without the aid of a PC or additional software. With all of the functionality of the HP Photosmart R817 Digital Camera, the R818 model comes bundled with the HP Photosmart R-Series Docking Station, the HP Photosmart R-Series camera sleeve and an additional Lithium-Ion battery.

Photokina 2006: HP announced a new series of professional photo printers at Photokina in the shape of the Designjet Z2100 and Z3100.The HP Designjet Series is the first to use an embedded spectrophotometer using X-Rite’s i1 Color Technology. It simplifies accurate colour-matching, enabling automated ICC profiling and HP Advanced Closed-Loop Colour Calibration. The Z2100 and Z3100 use 8-ink and 12-ink HP Vivera pigment ink system, respectively, and will be available in both 24-inch and 44-inch widths.
We’ve seen this story reported in many forms on many sites but only truly accurately on Imaging-Resource. The reality is that HP are not recalling the R707 but have instead issued firmware which can prevent a fire hazard. If the camera was used with a non-rechargeable battery (such as a Lithium Duracell CP-1) and then connected to the AC adapter or docking station there was a potential for the battery to overheat and even catch fire. This new firmware resolves this issue.
