Describes motivation process for creativity with emphasis on intrinsic motivation by Corey K Katir

In a move which will be of no surprise to many Hewlett Packard has outlined plans for the future of its digital camera business, announcing that it is to licence an OEM partner to design, source and distribute HP-branded cameras. This shift in strategy is intended to allow the technology giant to concentrate on developing its Print 2.0 initiatives, strengthening its position in the home and commercial printing markets. The current range of cameras is expected to remain on sale for the remainder of this year with the new partnership deal to follow in the early part of 2008.

Press release:

HP to Seek New Business Model for HP-branded Cameras

PALO ALTO, Calif., Nov. 7, 2007 - HP today announced that it will seek an alternative business model for its HP-branded cameras and shift resources toward its Print 2.0 growth initiatives.

HP is currently working to identify an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partner that would be licensed to design, source and distribute digital cameras under the HP brand. HP will continue selling its own cameras through the holiday season and intends to have the partnership arrangement in place in the first half of 2008.

This shift in strategy is intended to enable HP to accelerate its investment in Print 2.0 initiatives. These include furthering HP’s leadership position in home photo printing and online photo services, while accelerating the company’s retail photo-finishing business.

Announced in May 2007, the company’s Print 2.0 strategy focuses on three areas: delivering a next-generation digital printing platform that increases print speeds and lowers the cost of printing for high-volume commercial markets; making it easier to print from the web; and, extending HP’s digital content creation and publishing platforms across all customer segments.

As a result of its new camera business strategy, HP will take a pre-tax charge of approximately $30 million in the fourth fiscal quarter ending Oct. 31, 2007.

Summer is on its way and HP has a raft of releases to help capture the fun and games. The headline product is the Photosmart R937 which boasts a huge 3.6-inch touchscreen – the largest currently available – in addition to its 8MP sensor and 3X zoom lens. The remainder of the cameras released are hardly ground-breaking stuff but HP do seem to have all the bases covered price-wise with new cameras starting from $79.99. Also released are two new printers, one with wireless connectivity, and an ‘all-in-one’ printer, scanner and copier with CD/DVD printing capability.

Press Release:

PALO ALTO, Calif., June 21, 2007 - HP today introduced several imaging and printing products – including nine feature-rich digital cameras, two versatile single-function Photosmart printers and an all-in-one Photosmart printer – all designed to enable people to make the most of summer memories. Highlights include: a digital camera with the largest touchscreen LCD display of any compact digital camera in the industry; single-function printers that offer the fastest and easiest way to print lab-quality photos at home;(1) and an all-in-one printer that can print customized labels directly onto CDs and DVDs.

“Summer brings not only warmer weather, but family vacations, backyard get-togethers and plenty of other occasions where memories can be captured,” said Dan Gilbert, vice president of marketing, Digital Photography and Entertainment, HP. “HP’s latest digital cameras and printers are not only easy to use, but also empower people to customize and share their photos, their way.”

Interact with summer photos using touchscreen technology

The HP Photosmart R937 Digital Camera has a 3.6-inch Auto-bright touchscreen display for editing and organizing photos directly on the camera. Included within the touchscreen is a Microsoft Windows Vista™-compatible tagging feature and a virtual keyboard, making photo organization and management quick and easy once the camera is connected to a PC.

The 8-megapixel R937 also features the latest generation of HP Design Gallery, which includes the popular slimming feature that can take up to 10 pounds off photographed subjects, HP pet-eye fix to correct glowing pet eyes and HP touch-up technology for removal of blemishes.

The HP Photosmart Mz67 Digital Camera, which produces 8-megapixel photos, is HP’s first compact midrange zoom digital camera. The Mz67 features a big 6x optical zoom and a bright 2.5-inch display for easy viewing indoors or out.

Adding a splash of color to HP’s lineup, the HP Photosmart R742 Digital Camera comes in a wide variety of colors, including silver black and dark blue. Six other new HP digital cameras – starting as low as $79(2) – feature industry-leading in-camera red-eye removal,(3) HP steady photo anti-shake mode,(4) HP Design Gallery,(5) HP Photosmart software and Vista compatibility, making it easy to edit, share and manage photos.

The thin and lightweight, 5-megapixel HP Photosmart E337 Digital Camera is expected to be available for purchase in July. The remaining eight digital cameras, including the HP Photosmart R937 Digital Camera and HP Photosmart Mz67 Digital Camera, are expected to be available for purchase in August.

When combined with HP Vivera inks and HP Advanced Photo Paper, these printers offer reliable, low-cost photo printing, plus superior-quality prints.

Both printers feature easy-to-use 3.5-inch touchscreens, an HP Red-Eye Removal button for easy removal of red-eye from photos directly on the printer, HP Smart Web Printing(6) to ensure that pages from websites print without cutoff edges, Ethernet networking for added compatibility, and HP Auto Sense technology to prevent common printing mistakes.(7) In addition, the D7460 features built-in wireless(8) connectivity and Ethernet, making it even easier to share and print summer adventures using network-enabled notebooks and PCs.

The HP Photosmart D7260 Printer and HP Photosmart D7460 Printer are expected to be available in August for $149 and $179, respectively.(2)

Personalize CDs and DVDs with HP’s latest all-in-one printer
Joining HP’s popular line of all-in-one printers, the HP Photosmart C5280 All-in-One Printer allows people to create designs on a PC, then print directly onto CDs and DVDs(9) for convenient archiving or unique photo and music gifts. The all-in-one features include HP Smart Web Printing,(6) an automatic paper-type sensor for optimized print and copy quality and an HP Red-Eye Removal button.

The C5280 features HP’s new high-capacity inkjet cartridges(10) to enable affordable printing with fewer cartridge changes when printing everything that goes along with summer travels, including itineraries, maps and flight confirmations. The HP Photosmart C5280 All-in-One Printer is expected to be available this month for $149.(2)

Photokina 2006: HP announced a new series of professional photo printers at Photokina in the shape of the Designjet Z2100 and Z3100.The HP Designjet Series is the first to use an embedded spectrophotometer using X-Rite’s i1 Color Technology. It simplifies accurate colour-matching, enabling automated ICC profiling and HP Advanced Closed-Loop Colour Calibration. The Z2100 and Z3100 use 8-ink and 12-ink HP Vivera pigment ink system, respectively, and will be available in both 24-inch and 44-inch widths.

Press Release:

HP Revolutionises Colour Experience for Graphics Professionals with New HP Designjet Z Photo Printer Series

BOEBLINGEN, Germany, September 26, 2006 – HP today announced it is changing the way graphics professionals create large-format images with the unveiling of the new HP Designjet Z2100 and Z3100 Series Photo Printers. Continuing to expand its professional printing portfolio, HP is leveraging its pigment ink technologies developed for the HP Photosmart Pro B9180 to create the first large-format printers employing HP’s Scalable Printing Technology.

The HP Designjet Z Series printers are designed to deliver intuitive, dependable and repeatable colour accuracy for 24- and 44-inch museum-quality prints with 200 years’ photo permanence.1
“The HP Designjet Z Series Photo Printers enable photographers, graphic designers and artists to print their vision accurately and consistently,” said Enrique Lores, vice president and general manager, Inkjet Commercial Division, HP. ”With our breakthrough colour management features, graphics professionals can now leverage a truly intuitive and automated printing process that expands both their business opportunities and their creative boundaries.”

Experience simple and intuitive colour management

The HP Designjet Z Series employs the industry’s first embedded spectrophotometer, utilising i1 Colour Technology from X-Rite. Mounted on the printer carriage with completely self-contained optics and electronics, the embedded spectrophotometer greatly simplifies accurate colour-matching, enabling automated ICC profiling and HP Advanced Closed-Loop Colour Calibration. The result means the user can create colour profiles in minutes rather than hours and expect exact colour matches throughout the printing process.

Leading brands in the creative community, including Adobe, Colourbyte, EFI, GMG and X-Rite, have worked closely with HP to develop solutions optimised specifically for the HP Designjet Z Series to fully address the needs of key markets, such as graphic design, professional photography, prepress and digital fine arts. From X-Rites’s i1 Colour Technology to the use of Adobe’s Lightroom calibration application, these solutions further streamline workflow and provide users a simple, reliable printing experience.

The HP Z Series Photo Printer colour management partner tools include:

  • The embedded spectrophotometer, built on X-Rite’s leading i1 colour technology.
  • HP’s Advanced Profiling Solution2 co-developed with X-Rite that provides additional options for profiling and calibration. Integrated with the HP embedded spectrophotometer, this solution includes a monitor calibrator and profiler with editing capabilities to offer an end-to-end colour-managed workflow.
  • EFI’s RIP Designer Edition 5.12 developed with HP-specific inputs. New photo features and an improved user interface give graphic designers full control over digital proofing needs, saving users time and money.
  • Imageprint v.6 photo RIP from Colourbyte and ColourProof v.4 prepress RIP from GMG, developed with HP-specific inputs. The Imageprint v.6 is optimised for use by prosumers and professional photographers. The ColourProof v.4 works directly with the embedded spectrophotometer for print verification, radically shortening workflow.
  • The HP ProPrint Plug-in and the “Calibrate Printer” button in Adobe Lightroom, co-developed with Adobe. Print expected colours on the first try from Adobe Photoshop with the free HP ProPrint Plug-in, and use the Adobe Lightroom “Calibrate Printer” button to launch the colour management tools directly from within the application.

Create and customise ICC profiles with HP Advanced Profiling Solution

We’ve seen this story reported in many forms on many sites but only truly accurately on Imaging-Resource. The reality is that HP are not recalling the R707 but have instead issued firmware which can prevent a fire hazard. If the camera was used with a non-rechargeable battery (such as a Lithium Duracell CP-1) and then connected to the AC adapter or docking station there was a potential for the battery to overheat and even catch fire. This new firmware resolves this issue.

Press Release:

New HP Digital Photography Solutions Deliver Simplicity, Sophistication and Style

PALO ALTO, Calif., May 31, 2006 – HP today announced a new line of digital photography solutions with features and functionality that greatly enhance the photography experience for consumers.

The company also reported results from a new research study confirming that consumers believe HP Photosmart printers deliver the best overall photo printing experience.

Today’s product introductions include several affordably priced photo printers and all-in-ones, including the first and only compact photo printer on the market capable of storing more than 4,000 photos — the HP Photosmart A716 Compact Photo Printer.

HP also debuted its first touch-screen LCD on the HP Photosmart D7360 Photo Printer for an easy, kiosk-like printing experience at home, and unveiled four ultra-compact HP Photosmart digital cameras.

Feature-packed digital cameras

The 10-megapixel HP Photosmart R967 Digital Camera leads the lineup, featuring a 3-inch image display, durable metal body and sleek silver design. Both the HP Photosmart R967 and the HP Photomsart R827 Digital Camera feature a new innovation called HP steady photo anti-shake mode that utilizes high-sensitivity ISO with HP imaging technology to help prevent blurred photos.

Other features on these cameras include larger LCD display screens, greater megapixal resolution, and an on-camera button to easily order and share photos on Snapfish.

HP also added a new effect to its popular Design Gallery that allows users to turn a photo into a pencil drawing using the edges in the image – the result is similar to an illustration or line art drawing. First introduced earlier this year, the HP Design Galley lets consumers add creative touches such as borders, artistic effects and color tints to their photos with the touch of one button on the back of the camera without using sophisticated software on a PC.

Rounding out HP’s digital camera introductions are the easy-to-use HP Photosmart E427 Digital Camera with 6-megapixel resolution and 5x digital zoom and the ultra-compact HP Photosmart M627 Digital Camera featuring 7-megapixels and 24x total zoom – 3x optical, 8x digital. With today’s introduction, HP now has the broadest portfolio of cameras with in-camera red-eye removal under $500.

Photo studios on the go

HP’s new portable photo studios and compact photo printers are packed with features that make it simpler for consumers to capture and print brilliant photos almost anywhere. Among the featured enhancements, the HP Photosmart compact photo printer line includes a Photo Fix button that uses HP Real Life technologies to automatically remove red-eye, sharpen blurred images, and improve brightness, color and contrast.

Delivering the power of a PC in a printer, HP Photosmart A716 Compact Photo Printer is the only printer of its kind that stores photos – more than 4,000 – with four gigabytes of internal memory. Consumers can easily print 4 x 6-inch, 5 x 7-inch and panorama photos almost anywhere imaginable – parties, reunions, sporting events, family gatherings or vacations.

HP also added the ultra-light and portable(4) HP Photosmart A616 Compact Photo Printer and HP Photosmart A516 Compact Photo to its compact photo printer line. These printers enable consumers to conveniently print true-to-life 4 x 6-inch, passport and panoramic photos that resist fading for generations.

The HP Photosmart A430 Portable Photo Studio series is an integrated solution featuring a compact photo printer, built-in dock and an HP M- or R-series digital camera – with the option to purchase the photo studio printer separately from the digital camera. This printer has practically everything a digital photographer needs to capture and print 4 x 6-inch photos in three easy steps – snap, dock and print. Recent third-party testing showed that three out of four consumers preferred the HP Photosmart A430 Portable Photo Studio over Kodak’s Easyshare Series 3/C310 for the best overall printing experience.

The stylish and compact design of these printers coupled with the optional battery(4) makes these printers truly portable. For even greater portability, HP has added a built-in handle to the HP Photosmart A716 and A616 Compact Photo Printers as well as to the HP Photosmart A430 Portable Photo Studio series.

New Vivera inks featured in the HP 110 Tri-color Inkjet Print Cartridge were designed to work exclusively with HP’s line of compact photo printers. The inks produce lab-quality photos as well as enhanced image permanence and durability.

World’s fastest photo printers at lower price points

The company’s six new HP Photosmart photo printers and all-in-ones, built on HP’s scalable printing technology, feature the industry’s fastest print speeds(5) at the most affordable prices for consumers – as low as $129.

The HP Photosmart D7360 Photo Printer offers consumers a kiosk-like experience in the home via its touch screen LCD. This printer also has simple and intuitive photo features to save consumers time including: an HP Photosmart Express button with Print Wizard which provides step-by-step instructions to help new users get familiar with printing tasks like photo selection, paper size, layout of images and editing options; and a PhotoFix button to automatically remove

red-eye, apply Smart Focus and add photo brightening. Priced at $199,(6) the D7360 features six individual high-capacity ink cartridges that enable high-volume printing of 4 x 6-inch photos in as fast as 12 seconds.

Leading HP’s all-in-one line-up, the HP Photosmart C7180 All-in-One Printer, Fax, Scanner, Copier, incorporates leading scanning and wireless innovations for unparalleled ease-of-use. This all-in-one printer also features a large 3.6-inch LCD screen to easily view and select images, and is capable of producing true-to-life photos in as fast as 12 seconds. The HP Photosmart C7180 All-in-One also allows users to print photos from camera phones, notebook PCs and other devices with built-in Bluetooth™ wireless technology, or share with multiple PCs or Macs on a wireless Ethernet network.

Bundled with HP Photosmart Premier software, the new line of printers is optimized for use with HP Advanced Photo Paper for fast, instant-dry and water-resistant photos. Additionally, these photo printers feature HP Printer Check, a new automatic detection and download tool that identifies printer issues and updates out-of-date printer drivers. This tool also provides help on common printer issues with installation and configuration, and is available in and out of warranty at no charge.

Consumers declare HP provides best overall photo printing experience

HP reported findings from a recent, independent printer comparison study focused on ease-of-use. Conducted by third-party research firm Doxus, the study tested the HP Photosmart All-in-One C5180 Photo Printer, HP Photosmart D7360 Photo Printer, HP Photosmart A616 Compact Photo Printer and HP Photosmart A430 Portable Photo Studio and revealed(1):

  • HP Photosmart printers deliver the best overall photo printing experience as compared to other tested photo printers;
  • Most digital camera owners chose HP Photosmart printers over other major brands to print digital photos at home;
  • HP Photosmart printers are the fastest and easiest way to print lab-quality photos at home as compared to other tested photo printers;
  • People new to printing photos without a PC said HP was the fastest and easiest way to print a photo from a digital camera versus other major brands(7);
  • On average, digital camera owners printed a photo one minute faster with HP Photosmart printers versus other printers in their class.

All of HP’s digital photography products announced today run on a common user interface, HP Photosmart Express, to ensure consumers have a seamless experience for organizing, editing and printing their digital photos.

Press Release:

HP Helps Professional Photographers Stay Ahead Of The Competition

New Versatile Printing System Delivers Professional Quality Prints For Display Or Sale

ORLANDO, USA, February 27th, 2006 – HP today announced the launch of its new HP Photosmart Pro B9180 A3+ Photo Printer, designed specifically for professional photographers.

With eight, high capacity individual pigment-based HP Vivera Inks and enhanced media compatibility, this leading printing system allows photographers to be up to 30 percent more productive 1, helping them succeed in the increasingly competitive professional photography market.

Magnum photographer Carl Dekeyzer said, “There is no time wasted waiting around for proofs with the HP Photosmart Pro B9180. As well as demonstrating impressive print speeds, the new system delivers prints at an affordable cost per page. Finally, the outstanding image quality and the precise and consistent colours allow me to select those images that will be best suited to display or sell.”

Drawing on HP’s heritage in the graphics and commercial printing market this efficient, powerful new printer will produce high quality, instant dry, durable, waterproof prints that resist fading for up to 200 years, a new benchmark in photography. 2

The newly designed printing system features HP’s proprietary scalable printing technology for increased productivity, versatility and affordable cost per page, along with eight individual pigment ink cartridges, four two-colour printheads and a range of professional photo and fine art papers. The high-capacity ink cartridges allow professional photographers to print up to approximately 80 A3+ prints or 840 10 x15 cm photos 3. In addition, HP Pro print plug-in for Adobe Photoshop, and a host of ICC profiles in the printer software, deliver precise, predictable colour quality, print after print.

Professional quality papers

For photographers without large format printing facilities, producing A3+ prints that meet professional requirements is a challenge. Industry leading HP Advanced Photo Paper solves this problem. Featuring retail quality finishes, in glossy and satin-matt, customers will appreciate the durability of the thick, heavy paper. The paper’s instant dry porous coating allows immediate handling without smudging, helping to create a more productive and efficient studio.

Additionally, new A3+ HP digital fine art papers, based on HP’s professional large format media range, provide photographers with the materials needed to display their work in a gallery. Four types of papers – Watercolour, Aquarella Art, Smooth Fine Art and Artist Matte Canvas – provide professionals with greater choice when printing work for display.

Henry Wilhelm, Wilhelm Imaging Research Inc., (WIR) said, “With WIR Display Permanence Ratings of more than 200 years, prints made with the HP Photosmart Pro B9180 A3+ Photo Printer, Vivera pigment inks, and select HP glossy photo papers and matte fine art papers 4 set a new benchmark for overall colour print permanence. When displayed framed under glass, prints made with the new printer, inks, and papers are among the longest-lasting prints in the entire 130-year history of colour photography.

“To put this achievement in perspective, displayed prints made with the HP B9180 and Vivera pigment inks are five times more stable than the best of all current traditional dye-based silver halide colour prints, Fujicolor Crystal Archive prints (WIR rated at 40 years) — and more than ten times longer lasting than Kodak Edge Generations and Royal Generations prints (WIR rated at 19 years).”

Industry leading image quality with HP Vivera Inks

The eight high-capacity HP 38 Pigment Ink Cartridges, with new patented waterproof 5 HP Vivera inks, deliver durable life-like colour for professional portraits, landscapes, proofing and fine art prints. The new ink cartridges have been engineered to deliver consistent results with the HP Photosmart Pro B9180 A3+ Photo Printer.

In addition, the four HP 70 dual-colour printheads feature 8,448 nozzles for precise, consistent drop placement, enhanced colour accuracy and prints that will more closely represent the image seen through the lens and on the PC.

HP’s third generation grey ink creates colour as well as black and white prints with smooth transitions from one shade to the next, and subtle neutral tones that are consistent and controlled. Photographers can select from the two types of black inks: photo black for high contrast black and white photos with deep, rich blacks, or matte black for printing onto HP’s range of fine art papers.

For enhanced productivity, photographers can individually replace the printheads and single ink cartridges, which are available in 27ml sizes as required. This will help small studios keep costs in line with usage. For convenience, ink and media supplies can be ordered online at www.hp.com/eur/hpoptions. 6

Professional performance and versatility

The HP Photosmart Pro B9180 A3+ Photo Printer delivers ICC profiling options for perfect colour reproduction on a variety of standard and specialised media. Professional photos will look just as they did through the lens or on the calibrated monitor, with precision colour consistency for the highest quality prints, colour control and accurate photo proofs available for a variety of HP and non-HP media as well as digital fine art paper.

Photographers can immediately print their photos and proofs with HP’s fast, professional printing technology without having to rely on a photo lab. Proofs can be printed in less than 2 minutes for A3+ prints and less than ten seconds for 10x15cm prints, a new speed benchmark 7. The printer is perfectly suited to master the most challenging photo printing tasks as well as the everyday printing of documents.

PC, Mac or mixed environments requiring multiple connectivity options can utilise the USB-high speed and Ethernet networking capabilities. Software tools include Adobe Photoshop plug-in and optional raster image processor (RIP) software for professional colour management.

“Designed for professional photographers, the new HP Photosmart Pro B9180 A3+ Photo Printer and co-designed supplies, will help studios meet customer demands for high quality prints,” said Michael Diehl, vice president, Digital Photography and Entertainment, HP IPG EMEA. “The new printing system will also provide any photographer who is serious about photography with the tools to realise their artistic vision.”

With all the panache of their award winning predecessors, these sleek, metal encased digital cameras (the HP Photosmart R927 Digital Camera comes in stainless steel and the HP Photosmart R727 Digital Camera in aluminum) can capture even more intricate details from any scene.

HP has announced plans to stop selling digital cameras in the Asian market. An HP spokesman told dpreview, the company wants to “increase focus on opportunities that offer the highest possible return and where the company can deliver greatest customer value.” It will instead turn its attention to home printing in the region, reports ZDNet. The move is thought to be as a result of stiff competition from other manufacturers and follows the news that HP could make up to 25,000 of its workforce redundant. Digital camera sales for the region were not encouraging and research analysts IDC, showed that the company was selling so few cameras last year that it fell into the ‘other’ category. Outside of Asia however the company performed better, ranking no.5 in the United States and no.7 in Europe and Latin America.

HP is expecting to announce a huge restructuring that could mean between 5,000 – 25,000 redundancies, reports the Wall Street Journal. HP’s new Chief Executive Officer Mark Hurd, who was appointed in late March, plans to make significant cost cuts at the technology company which he said “has a cost structure that is off benchmark in many areas”. The restructure is likely to be announced at the end of the fiscal third quarter on July 29. The layoffs could bring around $100 million in headcount-related savings in the period.

Zoom in closer with the new HP Photosmart R817 and R818 Digital Cameras

With new HP Photosmart Scuba / Underwater camera casing these models are latest and most impressive additions to the HP R-Series range

LONDON, UK, JUNE 1, 2005 – HP today announced the launch of the HP Photosmart R817 and R818 Digital Cameras. Featuring a powerful Pentax 5x optical lens, 5.1 megapixel (MP) resolution and new intuitive HP Real Life technologies, these cameras make it easy for all photographers to capture unique detail in every picture.

With the HP sculpted wave style finger grip and sleek stainless steel finish these cameras are contoured to sit perfectly in the consumer’s hand. The HP Photosmart R817 comes with a bold silver finish to compliment the cameras’ smooth curves, whilst the R818 model comes with a dark midnight grey metallic finish for the fashion or design conscious consumer.

These cameras advanced features include multi-zone auto focus for crisp accurate shots. Users are able to select shutter or aperture priority, or choose to take greater control by working within the ‘full manual mode’ in light sensitive situations, in order to capture more creative photographs. Both cameras have an impressive 40x total zoom (5x digital, 8x optical) and the large 5.1 cm LCD screen, which features on both cameras, makes it simple to quickly view images, indoors and out, allowing users to check their shots as soon as they are taken.

New modes

A choice of 15 unique shooting modes including action, landscape, beach and theatre mode, gives users a definitive solution for any scenario. The new ‘theatre mode’, for example, makes it easier to capture correctly exposed true-to-life photographs of concerts and performances at the touch of a button. Photographers can use this feature together with the extended zoom to get up close and personal, no matter where they are sitting.

In addition, these cameras benefit from a host of new and exclusive HP Real Life technologies. These landmark features include the new HP In-camera Panorama stitching, which allows users to ‘stitch’ together multi-shot photos of landscapes and sequences in the camera. The camera can seamlessly stitch up to 5 photos together, without the use of a PC, to create a single photo for easy printing. Panorama photos can then be previewed on the camera’s large LCD screen, allowing users to confirm that they’ve captured their desired shot.

Both models are also equipped with a ‘video mode’, making it possible to capture the sights and sounds of every moment with picture perfect quality. Often, when reviewing video, photographers have a desire to extract specific frames or stills from the moving images. The HP Photosmart R817 and R818 Digital Cameras make it possible for users to print ‘stills’ directly from video footage, without the need for a PC. Users can extract, print and share any of the moving pictures as single frame photographs.

Other HP Real Life technologies featured on these cameras include HP Adaptive Lighting Technology, which automatically brightens selected areas of high contrast photos to give brighter, more true-to-life shots. Also, HP In-Camera Red-Eye Removal ensures that all photos taken turn out flawless, by amending the images whilst they are still in the camera, without the aid of a PC or additional software. With all of the functionality of the HP Photosmart R817 Digital Camera, the R818 model comes bundled with the HP Photosmart R-Series Docking Station, the HP Photosmart R-Series camera sleeve and an additional Lithium-Ion battery.

Waterproof housing

To protect the camera, wherever it goes, users can purchase the new optional HP Photosmart Scuba/Underwater Camera Case (Q6218A). This brilliantly engineered housing allows users to travel to previously unexplored depths of up to 40 metres (130 feet). The innovative ‘snap-on’ design gives users unrestricted access to all the functions of the camera, including the zoom, LCD screen and flash.

Additional accessories:

The camera can be purchased with or without an optional HP Photosmart R-Series Digital Camera Docking station, which creates a quick connection to both a PC and Mac. Using HP Instant Share software the dock makes it easy to download, print and email images straight from the camera. This multi-functional docking station can recharge the Lithium-Ion battery while it’s in the camera, as well as providing an extra charging bay for a second battery that is included with the dock. The dock can also be connected to a TV to allow easy viewing of photos as a slideshow using the ultra-slim remote control.

For more day-to-day protection, users can purchase the optional HP Photosmart R-Series Weather-Resistant Jacket (Q6215A) to protect the camera. Offering a strong outer layer, this jacket in no way reduces the functionality of the camera, working instead to protect its sleek sharp looks from the bumps and bruises of everyday use.

The HP Photosmart R817 Digital Camera is available bundled with the HP Photosmart R-Series Docking Station (L2033A) at a recommended street price of £349* or can be purchased on its own (L2031A) for £299*. Shipping date – end July 2005

Excellent Photos, Exceptional Camera

Capture great photos of your family and friends with the new HP Photosmart M517 Digital Camera

HP has announced the launch of its new digital camera designed to make it easier for all of the family to take exceptional digital photographs every time.

Equipped with 5 megapixel resolution the HP Photosmart M517 Digital Camera is perfect for taking pictures of both outdoor family activities as well as intimate portraits. With 24x total zoom (HP Precision 3x optical lens and 8x digital zoom), the images captured can be clearly viewed on the large 5 cm LCD screen or printed and enlarged up to A4 photo size, without any loss of quality to the image.

The camera is beautifully styled, featuring an intuitive button layout and ergonomic design, making it easy to secure a perfect image with one click every time. With 32 MB of internal memory, you can store dozens of images directly on the camera, or increase capacity with an optional SD/MMC memory card to potentially hold hundreds more.

The HP Photosmart M517 Digital Camera comes equipped with a set of award winning HP Real Life technologies. HP Adaptive Lighting makes it easy to automatically brighten dark areas in high contrast shots, revealing details normally lost in shadows. This feature gives great results even when photos are taken facing into the sun or in front of a window. HP In-camera Red-Eye Removal is another feature that allows quick adjustments of photos. The camera intuitively identifies and removes red-eye, saving red-eye free images in a few easy steps, explained on the camera’s large colour LCD screen.

The ‘fast shot’ mode allows you to take photographs in a rapid burst, making it possible to capture great action shots of family and friends, performances and events. This camera even allows you to grab short video clips, including audio, of those special occasions, so that the sentiment of the situation is not lost in years to come.

With HP Instant Share you can print and send images directly to your friends and family without having to send images as large file attachments. In addition HP Image Zone enables photos to be edited, organised and shared within seconds, avoiding complex procedures and large file downloads.

There are several optional accessories available for purchase to accompany the HP Photosmart M517 Digital Camera, including the HP Photosmart M-Series Dock (C8907A), HP Photosmart Quick Recharge Kit (L1815A) and stylish HP Photosmart M-Series Camera Sleeve (Q6214A) and Silver Camera Case (Q6217A).

The HP Photosmart M517 Digital Camera is available at a recommended retail price of €229 (actual prices may vary) (approx. $386).

Building on the success of the award-winning HP Photosmart R-series cameras, this easy-to-use 5 MP camera uses the latest technology to help you take better photos.
