NHK and JVC develop 120fps Super Hi-Vision projector

If your cine-cave is already decked out with the Super Hi-Vision display, the Super Hi-Vision camera, and the Super Hi-Vision-supping antenna, we guess you just need the 120fps Super Hi-Vision projector to complete the set? Guess what? Working with JVC, NHK has developed just that. It might not be much to look at, but that hunk of tech up there comes with the extra frame rate that also makes it play fast nice with the sensor technology NHK was kind enough to develop first. The projector will be giving its first public demos on May 24th , and we hope that 7680 x 4320 resolution will make all those hi-res skate-slams come out a charm.

A news item from SFLC.

New York, NY, June 7, 2010//Last week, the Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC) filed a motion for default judgment against Westinghouse Digital Electronics, a defendant in the ongoing lawsuit concerning GPL violations of the BusyBox software. The motion and the associated documents can be found here.

The lawsuit, initiated in December 2009 on behalf of the Software Freedom Conservancy and BusyBox developer Erik Andersen, alleges that 14 electronics manufacturers–including Best Buy, JVC, and Samsung–infringed the copyrights of the BusyBox program by not distributing it according to the terms of the GNU General Public License, version 2.

As of this date, four defendants (Samsung, Comtrend, Dobbs-Stanford, and GCI Technologies) have settled with the plaintiffs. More information about the lawsuit is available here.

Evidence of GPL Violations and Copyright Infringement Found in TVs, DVD Players, and Dozens of other Electronic Devices

New York, NY, December 14, 2009//Best Buy, Samsung, Westinghouse, and JVC are among the 14 consumer electronics companies named in a copyright infringement lawsuit filed today in New York by the Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC).

The SFLC is a non-profit law firm established in 2005 to provide pro-bono legal services to Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) developers. The suit was filed on behalf of the Software Freedom Conservancy (Conservancy), the non-profit corporate home of the popular software application BusyBox and many other FOSS projects, and Erik Andersen, one of the program’s principal developers and copyright holders.

The suit charges each of the defendants with selling products containing BusyBox in violation of the terms of its license, the GNU General Public License version 2 (GPLv2).

About BusyBox

Known as the “Swiss Army Knife” for Linux, BusyBox is a common component of a growing number of household devices, including Best Buy’s Insignia Blu Ray DVD Player, Samsung HDTVs, Westinghouse’s 52-inch LCD Television, and more than a dozen other products that the defendants have continued to sell without the permission of the software’s copyright holders. Under the terms of the GPLv2, anyone can view, modify, and use the program for free on the condition that they distribute the source code to customers.

The SFLC confirmed BusyBox violations in nearly 20 separate products cited in the complaint and gave each defendant ample time to comply with the requirements of the license. “We try very hard to resolve these types of issues privately with companies, as we always prefer cooperation” said SFLC counsel Aaron Williamson. “We brought this suit as a last resort after each of these defendants ignored us or failed to meaningfully respond to our requests that they release the source code”.

The First Rule of GPL Compliance: “Be Responsive When Contacted”

The SFLC has dealt with over a hundred compliance matters since its inception on behalf of various clients, including BusyBox and developers of significant portions of the GNU/Linux operating system. The vast majority of these matters usually end with violators voluntarily coming into compliance. In the rare cases when a company refuses to cooperate in good faith, the SFLC has been forced to take legal action on behalf of its clients to enforce FOSS requirements.

Since 2007, the SFLC has sued six companies, including Verizon and Cisco, for selling products with embedded FOSS programs in violation of the GPL. Though the scope of this lawsuit is unprecedented in that it includes 14 defendants, the SFLC’s primary goal is to encourage companies to join the software freedom movement, said Bradley M. Kuhn, Conservancy’s president and the SFLC’s technology director. “As embedded computer systems become more commonplace in everyday consumer electronics and more companies recognize the zero-cost licensing of Free Software over proprietary alternatives, it is more important than ever for manufacturers to learn to comply with the GPL”, Kuhn explained.

“The SFLC’s objective, on behalf of its clients, is not only to ensure the freedom of FOSS code but to see that BusyBox’s users get the full benefit of the software” Williamson added.

The suit was filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York and will be heard by Judge Shira A. Scheindlin.

A copy of the complaint is available on our website.

For additional information or to arrange interviews, please contact SFLC communications director, Lysandra Ohrstrom, at (212) 461-1915 or by e-mail at lohrstrom@softwarefreedom.org.

Epson Announces Availability of PRINT Image Matching II Plug-in for Adobe Photoshop

P.I.M. II Plug-in Enables Photoshop Users to Get Best Possible Prints from their Digital Camera

Epson America Inc. today announced the availability of a PRINT Image Matching II (P.I.M. II) plug-in for Adobe(R) Photoshop(R) 7.0, 6.0, and Photoshop Elements 1.0 and 2.0 for Macintosh and Windows operating systems. The new plug-in enables Adobe Photoshop users who own a P.I.M. II-enabled digital camera and P.I.M. II-enabled Epson photo printer to take advantage of the print matching and automatic benefits offered by PRINT Image Matching technology to create the best possible prints quickly and easily.

The P.I.M. II plug-in allows users to import JPEG files containing P.I.M. or P.I.M. II information into Adobe Photoshop and print them with the color, quality and detail that PRINT Image Matching technology provides. The plug-in was designed to be flexible, giving users multiple options: a user can either import with P.I.M. II, import Exif 2.2 images with Exif Print technology, a new standard for digital cameras published by the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA); or, the interface allows users to import an image with color expansion information only while disregarding other image enhancements for flexible print matching control.

“P.I.M. technology continues to have a significant impact on the growing digital imaging market,” said Fabia Ochoa, product manager, photo imaging, Epson. “The availability of the P.I.M. II plug-in furthers Epson’s pursuit to provide the ultimate photo printing solutions for consumers looking to print the best prints possible from their photo printer.”

More About PRINT Image Matching II

P.I.M. II automatically optimizes digital photos from P.I.M. II-enabled digital cameras. P.I.M. II offers fourteen image control parameters (two more than the original P.I.M. technology) including “noise reduction” control and “custom scene” settings. P.I.M. II can also be used with TIFF (RGB type) images in addition to the more common JPEG capture file formats. Products that incorporate the new P.I.M. II technology are also completely backward compatible, enabling customers to seamlessly continue using devices that utilize original P.I.M. technology. The Epson Stylus(R) Photo line of printers support the original P.I.M., P.I.M. II as well as Exif Print technology.

Since June 2001, over 70 P.I.M.-enabled products have been available from more than 20 manufacturers of digital cameras, photo printers and software. P.I.M II partners include Adobe, AISoft, ArcSoft, Asahi Optical Co. Ltd. (Pentax Corporation), Casio Computer Co. Ltd., CBN Systems, E-Book Systems, JVC (Victor Company of Japan Ltd.), Konica Corporation, Kyocera Corporation, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. (Panasonic), Minolta Co. Ltd., NewSoft, Nikon Corporation, Olympus Optical Co. Ltd., Ricoh Company Ltd., Roxio Inc., Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd., Toshiba Corporation and Ulead Systems Inc.

The P.I.M. II plug-in is available to customers as a free download from the Epson Web site at www.epson.com, www.printimagematching.com and www.support.epson.com. More information on P.I.M. technology and a complete list of current P.I.M.-compatible products is available at www.printimagematching.com.

Pre-PMA 2004: Delkin has announced an expanded line of digital camera and camcorder batteries. Among the products is the eFilm RCR-V3 digital camera battery. Many of today’s digital cameras are powered by two or four AA batteries, or in their place one or two of the popular CR-V3 batteries. Delkin’s RCR-V3 provides a rechargeable alternative in a Lithium Ion battery. Delkin’s broad line of memory card reader/writers was expanded with the introduction of the new USB 2.0 Reader-29, the only device on the market that will read and write to Secure Digital, Mini Secure Digital, MultiMedia and Reduced Sized Multimedia without the need for an adapter.

Press Release:

DELKIN EXPANDS DIGITAL CAMERA BATTERY AND READER/WRITER PRODUCT LINE

Poway CA, February 9, 2004 Delkin Devices Inc., maker of premium quality eFilm memory cards and other innovative products for camera stores worldwide, today announced an expanded line of digital camera and camcorder batteries. These new products will be introduced at PMA in Las Vegas February 12 through 15 at their booth C166. Chief among the products is the eFilm RCR-V3 digital camera battery. Many of today’s digital cameras are powered by two or four AA batteries, or in their place one or two of the popular CR-V3 batteries. But the CR-V3 is expensive and like Alkaline AA batteries, is disposable and presents an environmental concern with its one time use. Delkin’s RCR-V3 provides a rechargeable alternative in a Lithium Ion battery. The RCR-V3 also offers greater power output than NiMH researchable batteries, holds a charge longer, weighs much less, and is more economical over time. Delkin Devices offers the RCR-V3 packaged with a battery charger. The RCR-V3 is also sold separately.

The Delkin eFilm line of rechargeable batteries now includes five new offerings compatible with many popular cameras. The DD/BLM-1 is made for the Olympus E-1 and C-5060 camera. The DD/LIP-10/B-9519 will work in the Sony DSC-F55K, DF-1 and other cameras. Also designed for many of Sony’s digital cameras and camcorders is the DD/NP-550, which will power the DKC-FP3, DSC-D700 and D770, MVC-CD1000 and the MVC-FD-100 models among several others. The NP-100 meets the power requirements of the Fuji DS260 and several of the MX series cameras, plus a variety of JVC, Leica, Ricoh and Toshiba cameras. Finally, the eFilm DD/NP-80 rounds out this latest battery line expansion. This battery works in the Kodak DC4800, several of the Fuji Finepix MX series and Toshiba PDR series of cameras.

Delkin’s broad line of memory card reader/writers took a big step forward with the introduction of the new USB 2.0 Reader-29, the only device on the market that will read and write to Secure Digital, Mini Secure Digital, MultiMedia and Reduced Sized Multimedia without the need for an adapter. It has a true mini-SD slot, and its blazing fast USB 2.0 capability supports rapid file transfers. Joining the Reader-29 in Delkin’s product line are a value priced USB 2.0 CompactFlash Reader/Writer (Reader-28), Secure Digital/MultiMediaCard and Memory Stick Pro multi reader/writer, rounds out the new offerings and boasts the added feature of a detachable cable.

These attorneys can deal with injuries resulting from all kinds of accidents including car accidents, construction accidents, medical negligence and malpractice and even minor slips and falls. The best part is the lawyers only get paid when you get paid, so you have nothing to lose.

Criminal Defense

Spar and Bernstein’s team of criminal defense lawyers can handle anything from violent crimes, theft, drug crimes, white-collar crimes, to sex crimes, weapons offenses, juvenile defense, and even homicide. And, of course, they work hand-in-hand with the immigration department to handle deportation as well.

If you’re going through a separation and divorce, Spar and Bernstein’s attorneys can help you with issues related to child custody, child support and visitations. This law firm has also handled prenuptial agreements, adoption and equitable distribution of property following divorce.

Tax Relief

If you owe the IRS money, Spar and Bernstein can help. This experienced team offers tax relief from the IRS and can help you save money when it comes to paying off your tax debts.
